What social media management costs in 2026

Updated

Social media management pricing runs from free scheduling software to agency retainers in the thousands of dollars a month.

Where you land depends on three things: who writes the posts, who answers the comments, and how many platforms you need. This guide covers the four ways people buy that work. You can hire a freelancer, retain an agency, pay a flat-fee productized service, or run the software yourself.

Each market figure links to the public page it came from, and the full list sits at the bottom. No public number, no line.

GuruVox sells a flat-fee service, so we are one of the options here. Our prices have their own section near the end, as one data point among the rest.

At a glance

Prices are in US dollars. Each figure is quoted as the source states it.

Type of servicePublic price pointsWhat the quoted price covers

Agency $100 to $149 an hour for US agencies, and an average of $5,107.28 a month per project (Clutch). Strategy, a content calendar, posting and community management on one retainer. Ad spend is billed outside the fee.
Flat-fee productized $99 a month for 10 posts, and $149 a month for 5 short videos (Feedbird). A set number of posts a month at a listed price. Video and replies depend on the plan you pick.
Software only (DIY) Free, or $5 to $10 a month per channel (Buffer). $99 to $399 per user a month (Hootsuite). $199 to $399 per seat a month (Sprout Social). Scheduling, a comment inbox and analytics. You write, post and reply yourself.

Freelancer

Freelancer: $14 to $35 an hour on Upwork

Upwork puts social media managers at $14 to $35 an hour. The range comes from historical contracts worldwide, so it mixes countries and experience levels in one band.

For monthly work, the same page quotes $400 to $2,000 a month for account management on two channels with all services, based on intermediate-level US specialists. Each extra channel adds $200 to $1,500.

HeyOrca's 2024 survey of 100+ social media managers gave every respondent one brief. It asked for LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook, three posts per platform a week, 5 to 10 hours of community management a week, and reporting. Freelancers quoted $1,750.00 to $2,764.71 a month for that work, depending on years of experience.

You get one person. Replies are in scope only if the contract says so. Ask who runs the account when that person is sick.

Agency

Agency: a monthly retainer, with ads billed on top

Clutch, which collects verified client reviews of agencies, reports an average social media marketing project of $61,148.53, usually over 12 months. It puts the average monthly cost at $5,107.28. US agencies on Clutch average $100 to $149 an hour.

Survey quotes come in lower. In the HeyOrca survey, agencies quoted $1,833.33 to $2,277.78 a month for the same three-platform brief the freelancers priced.

A few agencies publish a floor. WebFX lists social media management starting at $3,000 a month.

An agency retainer usually bundles strategy, a content calendar, posting and community management. Ad spend is a separate bill. Clutch says that if you advertise, the agency fee will not include ad spend.

Flat-fee productized

Flat-fee productized service: a fixed menu at a listed price

A productized service sells a defined package at a published price. There is no proposal and no custom quote. You pick a plan and a volume.

Feedbird is a public example. Its post plan starts at $99 a month for 10 custom-branded posts, with design, captions, hashtags, scheduling and posting on one set of channels. Replies to comments and DMs are not on that list. Short-form video is a separate plan, from $149 a month for 5 videos, and Feedbird Pro, a senior lead who runs the whole program, is $1,500 a month.

GuruVox sells flat-fee plans too. Our numbers are further down.

Software only

Software only: you do the work, the tool schedules it

Buffer has a free plan. Essentials costs $5 a month per channel, or $60 a year per channel billed yearly, and the Team plan is $10 a month per channel.

Hootsuite runs from $99 a month for Standard to $399 for Advanced, per user, based on annual billing. Sprout Social lists $199 to $399 per seat a month, also billed annually.

These tools schedule posts, pull comments into one inbox, and report on results. All three now include AI writing help. The writing, the posting calendar and the replies still sit with you, and so do the hours.

Cost drivers

What moves the price

Platform count

Upwork calls the number of channels the most significant cost factor, and its sample table adds $200 to $1,500 a month for each extra channel. In HeyOrca's survey, 68% of social media managers named platform count as one of the most important pricing factors.

Posts per month

Volume is how flat-fee plans set price. Feedbird sells post plans in steps of 10, 20 and 30 a month. WebFX puts content creation at $40 to $150 per post.

Replies and community management

Answering comments and DMs is ongoing labor, and the price follows the turnaround you ask for. Upwork notes that a shorter agreed response time pushes the rate up. WebFX sells monitoring of social ad comments as an add-on at $300 or $600 a month, depending on the plan.

Video

Video costs more per piece than a static post. At Feedbird, $99 buys 10 posts and $149 buys 5 short videos. HeyOrca respondents named the rise of video content as one reason they changed their rates.

Ad spend

Ad spend is the money paid to the platforms, and it sits outside the management fee. WebFX charges ad management at $975 or 15% of ad spend, whichever is greater, from the second month, with a required ad spend range of $1,000 to $30,000. Get the spend and the fee quoted as two separate numbers.

Before you hire

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Who writes the posts, and who approves them before they go out?
  • Are replies to comments and DMs in the fee? How many hours a week, and how quickly?
  • How many platforms and posts a month does this price cover, and what does one more cost?
  • Is video included? How many pieces a month, and who edits them?
  • Is ad spend inside this number or on top of it? If the fee is a percentage of spend, what percentage?
  • What is the minimum term, and what do I get back if I cancel early?

Short answers

FAQ

How much does social media management cost per month?
Public prices run from a free Buffer plan to an average of $5,107.28 a month for agency projects reviewed on Clutch. Freelancers on Upwork typically bill $14 to $35 an hour. Most of the spread comes from who writes the posts, who answers the comments, and how many platforms you need.
What is included in social media management packages?
Read the line items, because two packages with the same price can cover different work. Feedbird's $99 plan covers 10 designed posts with captions, scheduling and posting. The retainer brief in HeyOrca's 2024 survey covered three platforms, three posts per platform a week, 5 to 10 hours of community management a week, and reporting. Feedbird prices video as a separate plan, and WebFX prices ad management separately.
Is ad spend included in social media management fees?
Usually not. Clutch says that if you advertise, the agency fee will not include ad spend. WebFX, for example, charges ad management at $975 or 15% of ad spend, whichever is greater, with a required ad spend range of $1,000 to $30,000.
Should I hire a freelancer or an agency for social media?
Decide by the work you need covered. In HeyOrca's 2024 survey, both quoted similar retainers for the same brief: $1,750.00 to $2,764.71 a month from freelancers and $1,833.33 to $2,277.78 from agencies, depending on experience. Ask each one who answers your comments when the account gets busy, and who covers it during holidays.
How much do social media management tools cost?
Buffer has a free plan and charges $5 a month per channel on Essentials. Hootsuite runs $99 to $399 per user a month and Sprout Social $199 to $399 per seat a month, both on annual billing. You still write, post and reply yourself.
What does GuruVox charge?
Starter is $300 a month for up to 6 months, Pro is $1,500 a month, Pro for nonprofits is $800 a month, and Enterprise starts at $4,500 a month. Every plan is a flat fee. You can cancel anytime, and every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee.
What happens after the six-month GuruVox Starter plan?
Starter runs for 6 months at most. After that you move up to Pro at $1,500 a month, or cancel from your account.
Does GuruVox have a nonprofit price?
Yes. Nonprofits get the Pro desk for $800 a month instead of $1,500. A partner confirms eligibility on your intake call.
How does the GuruVox 30-day refund work?
Inside your first 30 days, one button in your account refunds you in full. No call, no email chain. Every plan has it.
Do ads and video share one GuruVox allowance?
